Smarter Energy, Smoother Operations: How Demand Flexibility is Powering Change in Hospitality

Across the UK, estate managers in hospitality, healthcare, and education face a familiar challenge: how to reduce electricity consumption and emissions without compromising comfort or relying on expensive, disruptive upgrades. From rising energy costs to tighter decarbonisation targets, pressure is mounting, and solutions must deliver both impact and simplicity.

For high-consumption sectors like hospitality, where buildings must remain welcoming and operational around the clock, the stakes are even higher. Voltalis offers a practical answer that starts delivering value from day one.

Voltalis provides intelligent demand-side flexibility, helping buildings reduce electricity use automatically during peak times. Our technology connects directly to electric heating, cooling, or hot water systems. It responds in real time when the grid is under pressure, briefly lowering consumption without any effect on comfort or user experience.

Installation is quick and seamless. Each smart thermostat takes just minutes to fit, with no rewiring, no BMS changes, and no disruption to daily operations. And because Voltalis is funded by its contribution to the grid, there are no upfront costs or ongoing fees.

This is not traditional energy efficiency. It is a smarter way to use energy, reducing electricity consumption by up to 15 percent and lowering Scope 2 emissions in a way that is completely invisible to occupants.

At the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, the results speak for themselves. In September 2024, Voltalis was installed across more than 100 student accommodation rooms. The entire deployment was completed in just a few weeks, without any disruption to students or staff.

Six months later, electricity consumption across two accommodation blocks had fallen by 13 percent. The system had supported the national grid during over 5,000 events, helping to balance demand during high-stress periods. Crucially, there were no complaints from students, and no need for behavioural change or compromise on comfort.

Daniel Priddy, Head of Sustainability at UWTSD, shared his experience:
“Since installing the Voltalis solution, we’ve achieved a 13 percent reduction in electricity use across our student accommodation – all without any changes in comfort or behaviour. That’s rare, especially in a heritage university with complex infrastructure. What’s even more impressive is that despite the system running consistently, there were no complaints from users. Everything worked quietly and seamlessly in the background.”

Voltalis is now active in over 250,000 buildings across the UK and EU, managing more than 1.5 million devices. From schools and hospitals to hotels and council buildings, we are helping estates cut costs and carbon without the complexity of traditional upgrades.

We will be showcasing our solution at the Hospitality Tech Expo 2025, taking place on 30 September and 1 October at ExCeL London. Visit us at stand HT328 to learn how smart energy flexibility can support your goals, streamline your operations, and strengthen your sustainability strategy.
